Joy Dando
Joy has always been involved in music. She learned the guitar and recorder at the age of 7 and then began piano and organ at the age of 9.
At the age of 14, having sung for many years joined the church choir; and auditioned for the school musical The Boyfriend. She got the lead role and her love of musical theatre began.
Joy studied voice for many years with Beverley Humphries and Kelvyn Thomas from the Welsh National Opera and played many lead musical roles performing for a diverse range of audiences including Alexander Cordell. She also performed as a member of a semi-professional singing group called Girls in Harmony, touring and performing all over the country.
Joy’s professional career saw her train to be a teacher gaining a BEd Hons Degree and also a NPQH qualification. Within 9 years she became a Headteacher. It was here that Joy learned to play brass. Lana Tingay was a teacher in the school and she ‘told’ Joy that she would learn an instrument with the children, which she did. Every week Joy would sit with the children and it is here that she found a new passion for music.
Joy then became a very proud member of Gwent Charity Brass and Abergavenny Borough Band.
Now Joy a Music Therapist having gained a Masters Degree form the University of South Wales. Playing a brass instrument has really helped with therapeutic interventions undertaken, especially with stroke patients.
Joy currently plays the tenor horn.
