Jonathan Tingay
Jonathan started playing trumpet at the age of 9 at school, but quickly moved on to cornet when he joined Brodsworth Colliery junior brass band in his home town of Doncaster. A couple of years later Jonathan joined Armthorpe Elmfield brass band under the direction of Haydn Griffiths MBE; and spent many happy years learning and developing his musical talent on cornet, euphonium and trombone. Such is the depth of attachment to Armthorpe Elmfield, Jonathan organises trips back to Doncaster to coincide with concerts so he (and Lana and Elizabeth) can play and socialise with the band – many of the same players are still there some 30 years after Jonathan left to go to university.
Jonathan studied music and maths, gaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree, at Manchester University majoring on trombone. Following a brief spell living and working in and around London, Jonathan returned to the North West and joined Friezland Band in 2000. There he spent many happy years and joined the band on their second tour of Menorca and other international trips.
A career move saw Jonathan and family relocating to South Wales in 2007; which also meant a new band - Newbridge Celynen band – with whom he won the national 2nd section championships, playing tuba. 2 years later Jonathan moved to Abergavenny Borough band on bass trombone. He moves between trombone and Eb Tuba as required to support the band. For this Menorca trip, he is playing the Eb Tuba.
