I started playing trumpet at the age of 11 in the school orchestra.  My father had been lead trumpet player in a dance band so there was a trumpet in the house.

I rapidly moved into brass bands playing with Pegswood,Cowpen, Crofton, Ashington and Ellington Colliery bands all in Northumberland.  I then joined Northumbria Police Band and Gregg's Bakery Band who progressed from 4th to 1 st and then Championship Section in 4 years under the direction of Jim Shepherd.

When I moved to South Wales I joined Abergavenny Borough Band moving for a short time to Lewis Merthyr before relocating to Yorkshire. There I played with Stanley Newmarket, Ripon City, North Skelton and Easingwold Town band.

Moving back to South Wales in October 2015 I rejoined Abergavenny Borough Band.

I have played Eb soprano cornet for over 40 years my greatest achievements being:-
  • Winning the best Soprano cornet prize at Northumberland Miners Gala 5 years running
  • Playing at the National Finals several times at the Royal Albert Hall/Birmingham Symphony Hall and Harrogate International Conference Centre.
  • Touring in Germany and Switzerland.

My favourite test piece is The Essence Of Time by Peter Graham. and my favourite concert piece is the euphonium duet Les Pecheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) by Bizet.
